Industry Practitioner Report

PremierePro_GradientSupportShapes.png

– Who is the practitioner (first name only, please)? What is their role? How long have they been in the industry (roughly)?

My practitioner is Ivan D., he has been working as an editor and director of photography. He started his career roughly in 2005

– What type of productions do they work on? (genre, medium, long-form, short-form)

When he was at the school of cinema he used to shoot and edit every type of genre and formats for all type of courses and students just to get experience, after he start to work outside school, in a real professional environment he starts to work in documentary and TV shows.

– What are the expected duties of the filmmaking role described by the practitioner? (Use their anecdotes and other research)

For editor, the duties are get all the raw footage, watch the role thing, label, do comment in every video and keep everything organized, after that the editor should be able to tell a story using the footages, doing precise cuts and transitions, mixing the director decisions with the editor decisions.

For DOP, the duties are try to give the best look for the scene, understanding the vision of the director and putting your own style at it. To do that the DOP should have creativity, knowledge about lens, lighting, composition and camera movement.

– What is their day to day experience like in their role?

The day to day is a constant rush and pressure to keep thing on time and to do the best possible in the designed time, also long journey of work, with sometimes 16 hours shifts

– How did they “break in” to the industry? What was their pathway? Did they network? Was it luck? Did they go to University? How long did it take?

This area is not an easy one, it is all about network, but when you are starting you are unknown.

Ivan start his network at the university, where he tried to say “yes” to every type of film someone ask him to do, because of that he starts to be known, but it wasn’t luck, it was hard working. After that he start to work in an entry level work in a small TV station production, where he started to build his professional career, it took roughly 4 years, working hard, being ethic and building his network.

– Did they offer any useful knowledge about how to conduct yourself in their role? What should you do? What should you NOT do?

He gave lots of useful advices as work hard, stay at the production set until the end of the production, have a good work ethic, be kind and respectful, be alert all time and be helpful, and do not be “the-know-all” guy, like giving advices to professional in a higher position than you and do not have a big ego, if someone ask you to get coffee, go and get.

– What surprised you about their talk? Did they present anything that challenged your current thinking about the industry? (Be honest)

What surprised me was how honest he was exposing how the industry is, how hard and competitive it is, that only the ones that exceed the expectation and give all of themselves succeeds, doing all type of work in the begging, being friendly with everyone and after a few years you may get a call for a better position. What he presented opened my eyes for the reality, that things are not easy and simple.

– Can you apply any of this knowledge to your current studies/future plans? How?

I definitely can apply the knowledge, because now I know what comes ahead, I know what I should do to succeed and what type of knowledge and effort the market requires.

Film Colour Palette

Recently I found the instagram page called “Color Palette Cinema”, he analyse and present the colour palette used in certain film or scene, for me it is amazing because helps us understand how movies create their atmosphere and give meaning to the story just using colours. Also helps us if we would like to recreate the same look in our films.

A few months ago Laowa comes with it revolutionary macro lens, with this weird design , creating new possibilities for shooting video or photo.

As can be seen in the image below, it is a wide macro lens, that mix both words.

It is also water proof, giving filmmakers new angles.

It is a new technology that the market needs to learn how to use it properly.

Behind the scenes of MAD MAX

In this amazing video we can see the Behind the Scenes of MAD MAX Fury Road.
With over 303 stunts sequences. There were no CGI men jumping off, or hanging of the vehicles. But real stunt men. Now this is how it should be done , with stunt coordinator Guy Norris , who did some of the most amazing stunts of films gone by, doing his last and most fantastic stunt in the film. No, that was not a CGI ten-ton, sixteen wheel truck at 60mph driving directly into a wrecked 16-wheeler, without slowing down , that was REAL.

Film Review: The Holy Mountain

holy-mountain1.jpg

In The Holy Mountain, a character known as “The Thief” awakens in the desert, his face covered in flies. He befriends a dwarf with severed arms and legs, and the two go into the city to entertain the locals. The Thief bears a resemblance to Jesus Christ, which leads to his likeness being used to make plaster copies of Christ, presumably to sell to tourists. Shortly thereafter, the Thief discovers a tall tower, which he scales to find the source of the gold that his been dropped to the people below. At the top, he discovers the Alchemist (played by Jodorowsky). The Alchemist accepts the Thief as his apprentice, and so begins their spiritual journey. The Alchemist introduces seven others who intend to join them in their quest, all of whom represent their respective planets and have achieved fame and success, often through nefarious or cruel means. After burning all of their money, the group sets out to Lotus Island, where they believe they will find the secret to immortality.

For me this film present something never seen before, in the beginning it looks like a crazy movie, but the idea behind it and the message it gives is amazing. I really enjoy watch it.
