– Who is the practitioner (first name only, please)? What is their role? How long have they been in the industry (roughly)?
My practitioner is Ivan D., he has been working as an editor and director of photography. He started his career roughly in 2005
– What type of productions do they work on? (genre, medium, long-form, short-form)
When he was at the school of cinema he used to shoot and edit every type of genre and formats for all type of courses and students just to get experience, after he start to work outside school, in a real professional environment he starts to work in documentary and TV shows.
– What are the expected duties of the filmmaking role described by the practitioner? (Use their anecdotes and other research)
For editor, the duties are get all the raw footage, watch the role thing, label, do comment in every video and keep everything organized, after that the editor should be able to tell a story using the footages, doing precise cuts and transitions, mixing the director decisions with the editor decisions.
For DOP, the duties are try to give the best look for the scene, understanding the vision of the director and putting your own style at it. To do that the DOP should have creativity, knowledge about lens, lighting, composition and camera movement.
– What is their day to day experience like in their role?
The day to day is a constant rush and pressure to keep thing on time and to do the best possible in the designed time, also long journey of work, with sometimes 16 hours shifts
– How did they “break in” to the industry? What was their pathway? Did they network? Was it luck? Did they go to University? How long did it take?
This area is not an easy one, it is all about network, but when you are starting you are unknown.
Ivan start his network at the university, where he tried to say “yes” to every type of film someone ask him to do, because of that he starts to be known, but it wasn’t luck, it was hard working. After that he start to work in an entry level work in a small TV station production, where he started to build his professional career, it took roughly 4 years, working hard, being ethic and building his network.
– Did they offer any useful knowledge about how to conduct yourself in their role? What should you do? What should you NOT do?
He gave lots of useful advices as work hard, stay at the production set until the end of the production, have a good work ethic, be kind and respectful, be alert all time and be helpful, and do not be “the-know-all” guy, like giving advices to professional in a higher position than you and do not have a big ego, if someone ask you to get coffee, go and get.
– What surprised you about their talk? Did they present anything that challenged your current thinking about the industry? (Be honest)
What surprised me was how honest he was exposing how the industry is, how hard and competitive it is, that only the ones that exceed the expectation and give all of themselves succeeds, doing all type of work in the begging, being friendly with everyone and after a few years you may get a call for a better position. What he presented opened my eyes for the reality, that things are not easy and simple.
– Can you apply any of this knowledge to your current studies/future plans? How?
I definitely can apply the knowledge, because now I know what comes ahead, I know what I should do to succeed and what type of knowledge and effort the market requires.
